I see “spiritual practice” as a form of connectivity.
Connecting to God/The Universe/The Great Mystery/Love, along with the Compassionate Spirits who walk with us, ourselves and others.
My thought is spiritual practice reflects and releases the deep, divine love in each of us. Having a “practice” of any kind invites in a way of being that slows things down, allows, ignites surrender, brings in being present in every moment and above all strengthens TRUST.
I think trust is the most important component, next to Love, in a spiritual practice…
I think this because in, what I see as ‘the spiritual’, we are called to trust the unknown, believe in what we cannot see. And in a materialistic, concrete, immediate gratification world that can challenge some greatly.
My thought is that it is Love that helps lead us to Trust. I think this because it is Love that brings us back to center…it takes us out of our heads and “monkey minds” and brings us back to our heart center. Love has a way of easing our worry and anxieties. Love has the ability to neutralize negativity and release us from the hamster wheel of our own expectations.
Love is the foundation of a spiritual practice….and Trust is the desired outcome.
So let’s start there…let’s start with LOVE.
Think about all that you love in life…maybe even sit with your journal and write it down. Journaling is a powerful way to set intentions…I realize that writing is not for everyone, and some struggle with this form of expression. Then I would suggest maybe try art journaling https://daisyyellowart.com/aj101/
Expressing our Love is an important part of our practice, so it is up to us to find what container or tool best suits us, to help with this Creative Expression. For me it was journaling and photography.
(It could be painting, drawing, music, gardening, scrapbooking, writing, knitting, making soap etc. and please remember, it is not about being “good” at these things…it is about what it does to our spirits when we engage in these forms of expression. It’s about letting go of expectation and Loving our Selves right where we are…for all forms of expression are beautiful and needed in this world. It is in these creative places we learn to allow ourselves to make mistakes, because it is in the mistakes that we learn, grow and hone in our skills.)
Connecting with that which we love helps us clean, cleanse and clear our focus and draws back to what is important to our hearts…(Love the foundation of a spiritual practice).
I am a very visual person, so when I began my intentional healing journey I needed my environment to keep my intention in focus…and I wasn’t even clear at that time as to what my intention was, but I knew that I wanted to heal the wounds of my heart. So, I began to Create a Spiritual Environment within my home.
Quotes that resonate are a great way to bring you back to intention.
Print some of your favorites out and place them around your home where you will read them daily.
Imagery is also great for this…bring imagery into your home that ignites Love within you and directs your path.
Ornaments/statues/figurines are also a great to remind you of who walks with you and the guidance you can draw on…for example if one of your power animals is a wolf, having a wolf figurine might be something you want to gift yourself, or a beautiful wolf image…or you might resonate with Angels or Mother Mary.
You might think about removing and letting go of decorative items that do not hold a story or love connection to your intention.
In a way, what begins to happen is our home starts to take on an altar form. We adorn it with that which we love and in return it holds this beautiful intention for us, reminding us of this intention every moment of every day…bringing us back to (Love which is the foundation of a spiritual practice.)
Some of you have been reclaiming space within your home…this is another great way to engage in your spiritual practice. Reclaiming space for your self is an act of self Love….and Love is the foundation…well you know.
Physical Movement and Expression is also a part of a spiritual practice. Right away we go to yoga which is a great form of practice. Connecting the spiritual with our bodies in a very practical, beautiful and intimate way. But maybe yoga isn’t for you, and that’s ok. Being out in nature is a great way to connect with Love…walking, hiking, biking are all great ways to connect with nature…The Mother. She offers deep, uncomplicated healing. It is my experience and belief that She is able to hold all of our anger, grief, and struggles…there is nothing “too much” for her. She takes it all and composts it into something nourishing so that new life can spring from those darker places within us. Even if you are unable to do a lot of movement in nature, BEing in nature is important. Even when out on a hike I encourage you to take at least 5 minutes to sit and be…say a pray, lay down a burden, listen.
Even a walk with a noisy young family is effective. Let go of any expectations of how the spiritual life should look like….Spirit/Love meets you where you are at. (Notice how the children are at the beginning of the walk, and how they are at the end.) In certain seasons of our life it will feel as though we are “grasping” at moments but know this…even when you “feel” you are disconnected you are in still connected. Feelings are ever changing and sometimes hard to control…but this is where the mind-our thoughts become our allies. We can remind ourselves “Even though I do not feel connected, I am connected”.
What we put into our bodies is a part of a spiritual practice. Now, don’t freak out and fall into guilt and shame over this one. There is no place for such things in the spiritual. I think more than ever it is about being mindful and treating our bodies as the temples that they are. It is a reflection of self-Love. You are sacred space and need to be treated as such. Eating and Drinking mindfully is a healthy practice and opens us up to so much ancestral and cellular healing. It also helps our brain function to its fullest along with all our vital organs which support our health and wellbeing…it just makes sense.
Sacred Tools can be of great assistance.
In a broader view, I see sacred tools as anything that assists you on your journey. Books, Stone Medicine, Plant Medicine, Animal Medicine, Oracle Decks, Ritual, Ceremony, Altars, Medicine Bundles, Teachers, Gurus, those things that assist in the cleansing, clearing, cleaning of your being so you can see your path just that much clearer. Visit a metaphysical store in your area…get on the internet and google…read…experience…sign up for things…you will soon find out what resonates and what doesn’t.
Vision Boards are a great way to hold intention. You could make one for the entire year ahead, and then do a small one monthly if that appeals to you. Pulling an oracle card is a great way to engage. This again could be done yearly, monthly or daily… or all three. Remember that if you do this, engage with your vision boards daily, keep you cards close and revisit their message again and again. Be intentional with them, keep the relationship active.
Engage in your life actively.
Build around you support.
Do not do this on your own.
Be willing to make mistakes.
Push yourself, ever so gently.
Surrender/Release/Let go…again and again and again
and above all
Love yourself truly, madly, deeply!
I invite you to see your practice as a way of life…a way of being in this world. There is ebb and flow in all things, and no such thing as perfection. There is no guaranteed 7 step program, (sorry to my A-types), as you are forever changing. As the earth changes with each seasons, so do you. Take comfort in knowing that. You are not required to have it “nailed down”…you are invited to engage in the current of your life.
By seeking, building, gathering, learning, listening you are living your spiritual practice. How far you go it entirely up to you…you are Loved either way.
I believe that by engaging in some of these things I have mentioned Trust will grow…as Love shows us the way.
I would love to hear your thoughts, ideas and actions around your spiritual way of being. I invite you to share in the comments so we can learn from each other.
Love and Light
